A few years ago, I bought a waffle maker for thin waffles, which I often use to make crispy sweet, and savory crackers waffles.
The goal of this post is to show you what can you make with a super-thin waffle maker. I also included a recipe and some creative ideas, as well as solutions to problems that often arise when baking waffles based on my experience.
You can use a crispy, thin waffle maker to bake different kinds of super thin sweet waffles and savory crackers. • Thin, crispy savory cheese waffles, which can also be prepared gluten-free • Waffle cones and bowls for serving ice cream • Waffle rolls that you can fill with various icings • Stroopwafel (dutch syrup waffles) • Mini waffles for decorating cakes and frozen desserts. You can use a waffle cone maker, a pizelle maker or the krumkake iron for this purpose.
Sweet waffles dipped in melted chocolate and optionally sprinkled with chopped hazelnuts can be a decorative, tasty snack on their own.
Before baking, you can flavor the savory cracker dough with spices, such as chili peppers, and add cumin or sesame seeds. Cheese crackers go well with a tomato or mayonnaise dip.
What kind of waffle maker makes thin waffles?
We can bake thin, crispy waffles with waffle cone makers, krumkake irons, and pizzelle bakers. The baking plates of these devices have a shallow pattern of only 1-2 millimeters.
Waffle makers can be electric, like mine, but there are cast iron or aluminum stovetop waffle makers, which I also liked to use.
You can make one type of sweet waffle from the kneaded dough, which you shape into small balls and put into the preheated waffle maker. The other type is made from a mixed thick batter, which is added with a spoon to the bottom baking plate.
Savory crackers are made from kneaded dough made with butter or margarine. Form small balls from the dough and also place them on the bottom plate of the preheated waffle maker.
Close the waffle iron and the biscuits will be ready quickly. If you use an electric waffle maker, it is best to remove the waffles with a heat-resistant plastic spatula, as it will not scratch the non-stick coating.
How do you use a waffle cone maker?
The waffle cone maker must be preheated before starting to bake waffles or crackers. On electric waffle makers, the temperature can usually be adjusted in a simple way.
The stovetop waffle iron also needs to be preheated, but it is more difficult to determine if it is at the right temperature.
In the case of both electric and stovetop waffle irons, it is good to test the temperature and baking time with the first waffle. Also, note how long you have to bake the waffle to get a nice golden brown.
After the waffle is baked, remove it from the waffle iron with a heat-resistant spatula and place it on a clean kitchen towel or tray.
The best waffle recipe for making cones, bowls, and rolls
I have been using this waffle recipe for years. After baking, the waffle can be shaped perfectly and is very tasty. It requires only four basic ingredients and is easy to make. Ingredients: • 70 g / 2.5 oz soft butter, • 50 g / 1.8 oz powdered sugar, • 40 g / 1.4 oz egg whites, • 100 g / 3.5 oz all-purpose flour. Optionally, you can add vanilla, a little lemon zest or cinnamon as flavoring. Instructions: • Beat the butter and powdered sugar with an electric mixer until fluffy. • Mix in the egg white little by little, and finally add the flour. • Mix the batter until completely smooth and homogeneous. • Let it rest for at least 30 minutes. Place a spoonful of batter on the bottom plate of the thin waffle iron and close it. Bake until golden brown, then remove the baked waffle with a spatula. The waffle batter can be stored in the refrigerator for two or three days, in a closed plastic or glass container. It can also be frozen and stored in the freezer for up to three months. Allow to thaw before use, then bake the waffles.
How to shape the waffles?
It is important to note that the shaping of the waffles must be done while they are still hot, otherwise they will harden and become brittle. Hot, freshly baked waffles are elastic and moldable for a brief time.
Not everyone’s hands can withstand this high temperature. If you are sensitive to heat, a pair of heat-insulating gloves, such as those used by confectioners when making caramel, can help.
Baking and shaping waffles require some practice and routine, so don’t worry if the waffle cones, bowls, and rolls are not perfect at first.
Waffle cone
Waffle cone makers usually come with a cone-shaped tool for rolling. Wooden pizzelle cone rollers are the most suitable for this purpose.
After the round waffle is cooked, remove it from the baking plate with a heat-resistant plastic spatula and place it on a tray or marble slab. Using the cone-shaped tool, roll up the hot waffle and leave it for a few moments until it hardens.
Waffle ice cream bowl
You can serve the ice cream in an edible waffle bowl. They are delicious and also decorative. You may also wish to read if it’s worth buying an ice cream machine for home use.
Lift the cooked waffle off the waffle iron plate with a heat-resistant spatula, then carefully press it onto a drinking glass or bowl and press with another while still hot. It will harden in a few moments.
Take the waffle bowl out of the mold after it has hardened and let it cool completely. If you thinly coat the bottom and sides of the waffle bowl with melted chocolate and let it harden before adding the ice cream, it won’t get soggy as quickly and will stay crispy longer.
Waffle rolls
You can also make rolls from freshly baked waffles by wrapping them around a cylindrical object while they are fresh and hot.
Since I usually make small rolls, I roll up the waffles with the handle of a wooden spoon. Waffle rolls can be used to decorate ice cream cups and cakes. Their ends can be dipped in melted chocolate and sprinkled with chopped toasted hazelnuts.
You can make waffle rolls in different sizes and fill them with various icings. One of my family’s favorite desserts is mini waffle rolls filled with chocolate buttercream and dipped into melted chocolate on the ends.
Stroopwafel
This tasty waffle snack comes from the Netherlands. Fill the baked waffle discs with the special syrup and you enjoy your homemade stroopwafels.
Thin crispy cheese crackers
It might sound a bit unusual, but you can also make savory snacks with a waffle cone maker. These thin cheese crackers are very tasty, and crunchy, and can be kept for a long time if stored properly.
You can make cheese crackers using different types of grated hard cheese, such as Cheddar or Gouda, according to your taste. Various spices and cumin or sesame seeds can be added to the dough.
If you work with corn flour instead of wheat flour, you can also make gluten-free cheese biscuits.

What is the best thin waffle maker for home?
As I mentioned above, waffle makers for home use can work in two ways. The newer types are the electric ones. Traditional and sturdy waffle makers are made of cast iron or aluminum, which can be used on the stovetop.
Electric waffle cone makers for home use
The baking temperature of electric waffle makers can be easily adjusted. They have non-stick baking plates, which make it easier to remove the waffles from the baking surface and simplify cleaning.

Stovetop waffle cone makers
The great advantage of stovetop waffle cone makers is that since they have no electrical parts, there are not many things that can go wrong with them. This type of waffle iron is really sturdy and long-lasting. Another advantage is that it is easier to clean because you don’t have to pay attention to the electrical parts.
With stovetop waffle makers, we cannot control the temperature precisely, but with a little practice, we can achieve good results.

This aluminum stovetop waffle iron is made in the USA. It can be used on gas, electric, and ceramic stoves. It comes with a wooden rolling tool. It is equipped with a well for excess butter, which prevents mess during the baking process, and makes it safe.
Does the waffle batter need to rest?
It is best to let the waffle dough rest for at least half an hour before baking. During this time, the gluten activated by mixing will absorb the moisture, making the dough denser and more uniform in texture.
Why are my waffles sticking to my waffle maker?
Waffles mostly stick to the waffle iron plates due to the high sugar content of the dough. The best solution for this is to reduce the amount of sugar in the recipe when making the waffle dough.
Before baking, you can lightly butter the plates of the waffle maker or spray them with non-stick spray to prevent the waffles from sticking. You can spray some non-stick spray onto the plates while working.
How to clean a waffle cone maker?
If the dough sticks to the waffle iron, turn it off and let it cool down so it doesn’t burn your hands.
Remove as much of the dough as possible with a plastic spatula, then clean the waffle residue with a soft damp cloth and possibly a little dishwasher soap. Finally, wipe the waffle iron plates with a clean, damp cloth before using them again.
How do you keep waffle cones from getting soggy?
No one likes soft, soggy waffles, but fortunately, we can easily eliminate this problem. The first important aspect is that the waffles are properly baked. Both sweet waffles and salty crackers are properly cooked when they are golden brown.
After removing the waffles from the waffle iron, let them cool completely. Do not stack them hot on top of each other, because they will soften from the steam that forms.
Properly baked and completely cooled sweet waffles and savory crackers can be kept crispy by storing them in a closed metal box until consumption.
Properly prepared and stored waffles and crackers can be kept fresh for up to two weeks.
Final thoughts
